July 28, 2001 By Bob Deiderich, Friends of the Center On July 10, the City Council voted unanimously to allow the issue of building a recreation center to be on the November ballot. The construction of the center and subsidizing the operating costs of the center would be paid for by a 0.055 percent sales tax increase, e-quivalent to 5.5 cents on a $10 purchase. Because the sales tax increase would be a city tax, only city residents can vote in the election. The use of the facilities would be available to everyone under the same fee schedule. A committee of county and city residents has been formed to promote the passing of the bond issue. This committee is called "Friends of the Center." We need more people to join in our effort. There will be a meeting Aug. 2, at 7 p.m., in the Calvin Denton room at Empire Electric’s office. Everyone is invited to attend and become part of the community. Also money is needed to pay for the advertising program to promote the center. The maximum amount any individual or corporation can contribute is $100. Of course, a person can contribute as an individual and as a company. Donations should be sent to Friends of the Center, P.O. Box 1162, Cortez, CO 81321. Through people becoming members of the committee and people donating to the advertising fund, we will be successful at obtaining a family recreation center in Cortez. This will be a facility for the use of all, young and old alike. Please join our effort. |
