The kindness of strangers

May 1, 2001

The generosity of strangers is true charity, and the recent story of sewer disconnects and expensive reconnects has inspired at least one man to help.

A visitor to this area was introduced to the Cortez Journal editor at church on Sunday. His home church, near Gunnison, had ended its fiscal year with a surplus, which was distributed in $50 segments for congregation members to use as the spirit moved them. This traveler had read about the woman who had sold her wedding rings in order to pay for restoration of her sewer service, and he was moved to contribute the $50 share given into his keeping.

"I’ve been carrying this around with me," he said, in handing over the money, "and when I read that story I knew what I was supposed to do with it." He offered to give additional money of his own as well.

Such seemingly random acts of kindness take place completely outside of any institutional arrangement, and they go far to restore faith in human goodness. It’s heartwarming to witness actions that have no direct benefit to the giver.

The money and the man’s business card will be passed on to the Southwest Center for Independent Living.
