March a busy month for City Council

March 31, 2001

By Cheryl Walkenhorst

March roared into the council like a lion, but hopefully, it will go out like a spring lamb.

Concerning the Iron Horse Motorcycle Rally, "to have or have not" was the big question. I know it was difficult for the County Commissioners who had to make that decision. The people I talked to seemed evenly split on the issue I did have a laugh at one letter to the editor that referred to the decision makers as the City commissioners.

Our tough decision this month was the selection of a new councilperson to complete Karen Garner’s term. First let me say how much I will miss Karen, and I thank her for all the time and effort she gave to the council. Hers were big shoes to fill (and I don’t mean she has big feet!)

It was wonderful to have eight people to choose from. Thanks to each and every one of them for taking the time and being interested in serving as a councilperson. It was a very diverse group and they all had wonderful qualifications and perspectives to offer.

You might be wondering if they were all that good, how did we ever select one? We interviewed each candidate for approximately 15 minutes and asked them each the same set of questions. At the end of the evening, we all selected our top two or three choices and did a quick poll to see if by chance we had all selected the same people.

Fat chance! I felt we thoroughly hashed it over and each council member had an opportunity to talk about the responses and qualities of his or her particular choice. I believe it really was democracy at work, and we welcomed Mr. Harold Foster Sr. as our new councilperson,

At the same time, we said goodbye to Drew Nelson who has been with the City for just over a year as our planning intern. He has worked diligently on our new comprehensive plan, as well as on other much-needed projects. He leaves us to accept a position with the City of Greeley, Colo. as a Planner I. It is a wonderful opportunity for Drew, and I know we will all miss him, but we wish him the very best.

One last pitch — we have an opening on the City Planning and Zoning Board — please, please consider applying and participating in your City’s growth process.
