Oct. 28, 2000 Referendum C would allow county surveyors to be appointed rather than elected. It is a straightforward, if undramatic, revision to the state constitution that would serve to streamline local government and remove politics from an already largely apolitical position. It deserves to pass. Not that Referendum C would result in any revolutionary change. As it is, fewer than half of Colorado counties have an elected surveyor, and of those only two are full-time. (Colorado’s three home-rule counties, Pitkin, Weld and Denver, are not covered by this measure.) As things stand now, if no one runs for the office Colorado law allows county commissioners to appoint a surveyor, to assign those duties to another employee or to farm the work out to private firm. Referendum C would constitutionally acknowledge what most Colorado counties have already recognized: County surveyor is a technical job, not a policy-making position. Politics has no place in the surveyor’s office. Vote for Referendum C. |
