Oct. 12, 2000 This is another proposed amendment to the state’s constitution, a place where these money matters do not belong. Referendum A would cut the taxable value of a home by one half of the first $200,000 of its value, resulting in lower property taxes. This would affect taxpayers 65 and older who have lived in the house for 10 years. It would affect property taxes paid in 2003. About 107,700 homes are expected to be involved, should the measure pass, and the average tax saving would be $410 (considerably less in Montezuma County). In this measure the state is required to reimburse the local taxing districts for revenue lost and the money is to come from the surplus. That will only work as long as a surplus exists, and this referendum does not provide sufficient flexibility to allow for different funding mechanisms after the surplus is gone. Vote "no" on referendum A. |
