Odds of white Christmas called higher than usual

Dec. 21, 2000

All the pieces seem to be in place: Ski Hesperus has opened its slopes after a year’s hiatus, fears of another dry winter vanished following recent snow storms, and frigid temperatures continue to annoyingly frost our car windows every morning.

But knowing for sure whether this means we’ll awaken to a classic white Christmas replete with snow falling, dogs frolicking and children sledding is about as predictable as winning the lottery.

A local weather website puts a big question mark over Monday, Dec. 25, and the National Weather Service rather humorlessly put the chances of snow that morning at 50-50.

Flip a coin, Santa.

"Honestly, it looks better than it usually does this time of year," said Chris Cuoco, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "There is a series of weak storms coming in, and one of them hits Christmas Eve from the north."
