Man arrested in burglary at Mesa Verde museum

Dec. 5, 2000

A former Montezuma County man has been arrested and charged in an April burglary at Mesa Verde National Park, according to park spokesman Will Morris.

Robert Fuller, 26, who has lived in both Cortez and Mancos, was arrested on Dec. 1 in Farmington, N.M., according to Morris. A federal arrest warrant had been issued for him in November after a grand jury indicted him on burglary charges.

Early in the morning on April 18, according to a park press release, the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum at park headquarters was broken into and burglarized.

A rear window leading into the office of the Mesa Verde Museum Association was broken and a large safe containing $1,439 in cash was taken from the building, the release said. The association is a non-profit organization that sells books and educational materials at the park.

Because there was little evidence at the scene, park officials feared the case might never be solved.

However, a Cortez police detective who asked not to be named developed a lead in the burglary while investigating another case, the release said. He contacted an FBI agent as well as National Park Service Special Agent Susan Morton, who had worked on the case for several months.

The information led to Fuller’s indictment on felony burglary charges.

Morris said Fuller was taken to the federal magistrate’s office in Albuquerque for arraignment and a bond hearing, and will be tried in Denver at a date yet to be determined.

More charges are pending in the case, Morris said, and it is "still wide open."
