Nov. 25, 2000 By Aspen Emmett Alleged careless driving and icy road conditions early Thursday morning sent one man to the hospital for minor head injuries resulting from a two-car accident on Highway 145. According to Colorado State Trooper Chris Cutrone, a Toyota Tacoma driven by 23-year-old Nathan Frigard of Arizona was headed north and rounding a corner when he lost control of his vehicle, colliding with a oncoming vehicle with two passengers. The driver of the southbound vehicle, 40-year-old J. Montano-Perez, address unknown, sustained minor head injuries and was transported by ambulance to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. Frigard was not hurt. Cutrone said Air Care was initially called but was later canceled. "It wasn’t as bad as we originally thought," Cutrone said. The person who initially called in the accident reported head injuries and believed it would take too long to reach the scene by ground, Cutrone said. Rico Rescue responded to the call and determined that the injuries were not serious enough to warrant the helicopter and called in an ambulance instead. Frigard and a female passenger, both of Arizona, were on their way to Telluride for a day of skiing at the time of the accident. Frigard was traveling at approximately 40-45 miles per hour in contrast to Perez’s 25 mph. The late-evening rain on Wednesday froze when temperatures dropped, leaving a layer of ice that was later topped off by snow, Cutrone said. When Frigard came around the corner, he braked, causing his vehicle to slide across the road and sideswipe Perez’s car. Frigard was issued a ticket for careless driving causing bodily injury and no proof of insurance, Cutrone said. |
