The city of Cortez was awarded a $74,500 grant Friday to help finish needed repairs at the Cortez Municipal Airport.

The money was granted by the Colorado Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics, and will go toward re-surfacing the airport’s runways and improving the aprons, which are areas adjacent to the roadway.

"This funding will help the county with its infrastructure needs and will benefit the entire community," said Gov. Bill Owens in a press release.

The Colorado Aeronautical Board reviewed 46 grant applications this year, and awarded a total of $1,996,432 for 28 individual airport enhancement projects.

Funding for the grants comes from aviation-fuel tax revenues. A number of the awards were made to assist airport sponsors in meeting the local requirement for matching funds to federal projects.

Hal Shepherd, the city manager, said that the city of Cortez has also applied for a grant from the Federal Aviation Agency to finish the improvements.

Shepherd explained that 10 percent of the funds needed for the improvements would come from the city and the state, and the rest of the project would be funded from federal coffers.

He said the runway is not in hazardous condition, but needs to be repaired in 2001, rather than 2002, when the resurfacing was originally rescheduled.

With the grant money, the needed repairs will likely be finished by the fall of 2001.

"It’ll help keep our runways and aprons in good-quality conditions," said Shepherd.
