Holiday festivities swing into full gear in the area starting with the Cortez Christmas Kickoff on Saturday, Dec. 2, in downtown Cortez.

At 3 p.m., Santa Claus will be coming to Cortez with free goodies. The event, which will take place at Main and Market streets, is hosted by the American Legion Post No. 75.

Then, from 3:30 to 6, is "Kids Create while Parents Shop," hosted by the Cortez Community School of the Arts. For a $3 fee, parents can leave their children, aged 2 or older, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. The children can participate in two different art projects under instructors. There will be plenty of babysitting and supervision available.

Meanwhile, the downtown businesses will be open with refreshments and special deals.

The evening will be capped by the Parade of Lights through downtown beginning at 6:30.

Bell-ringer Bill Fraser of Cortez watches while Eva Martinez of Albuquerque, who is in town visiting for the holidays, makes a donation to the Salvation Army. Fraser has been a bell-ringer for the charity for 10 years.

Area merchants are also taking part in the 2000 Christmas Promotion. Each Tuesday from Nov. 28 through Dec. 19, drawings will be held for gift certificates from local stores. There will be two winners per drawing.
