MEMBERS OF THE CHAMBER CHOIR go through a warmup exercise during a recent practice session in the choir room at Montezuma-Cortez High School. The Chamber Choir and several other choral groups will be performing the annual fall concert this Monday in the auditorium.

Their songs won’t necessarily fill the hills with "The Sound of Music" but their voices will fill the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium as several choral groups will perform the annual fall concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20.

No admission will be charged but donations are always welcomed to help off-set some travel expenses.

The Chamber, Jazz, Honor, Concert and Mesa Elementary choirs are scheduled to perform, according to MCHS Choir Director Marla Sitton.

"This is our first big concert of the season," she said. "I think it should really be a great show as we have a number of different selections."

Some of the selections to be performed include the theme from Rogers and Hammerstein’s "The Sound of Music," "It’s Only a Paper Moon" by Billy Rose, "Go Where I Send Thee," by Andre Thomas, the finale from The Gondoliers Light Opera, "Worthy to be Praised"by Byron J. Smith with solo performances by Brian Blakely and Regina Thornton. Also performed will be the songs "Come Let Us Sing Unto the Lord," by George Fredrick Handel; "O Danny Boy," by Joseph Plummerfelt, plus several other lesser-known songs.

Brittney Johnson will accompany Sitton.

Sitton reported the MCHS Chamber Choir performed at the Calvalcade of Music last May. The group took first place. And on that trip to Denver, the group sang the national anthem at a Colorado Rockies game.

The annual winter concert (with the MCHS band), featuring songs of the season, is set for Dec. 21. Several choirs plus bands will be performing at various places, including Farmington and Durango, throughout the holidays. MCHS will once again be one of the host sites for the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Small Groups Festival this April.
