Nov. 14, 2000 journal and herald staff reports Two men, one formerly from Cortez, died in a car accident three miles west of Hesperus on Monday, according to the Colorado State Patrol. An 88-year-old man who recently moved from Cortez to Monte Vista was driving a 1988 Oldsmobile east on Highway 160 when he hit a patch of ice and slid to the other side of the road, according to the patrol. The man was wearing his seat belt and both airbags deployed, the patrol said. A Ford Aerostar minivan driven by a 50-year-old man from Farming-ton, N.M., broadsided the car on the driver’s side. The car landed on the north side of the road with the minivan perpendicular to the highway in the westbound lane. The minivan was a pilot car for an oversized semitrailer carrying a house. The collision occurred at 11:31 a.m., sources said. The Oldsmobile’s driver reportedly died instantly, and the New Mexican, who was not wearing his seat belt, died on the scene just ten minutes later. No other injuries were reported, and there were no passengers in the vehicles. Close to an hour before the accident, another driver had slipped off the road at the same patch of ice. A state trooper was helping the driver when the accident occurred. The state patrol declined to identify the victims until next of kin had been notified. |
