Bandit swipes movie theater's safe

Nov. 7, 2000

Journal Staff Report

In the wee hours of Oct. 23, someone entered the Fiesta Theater and pulled off a classic crime.

According to reports from the Cortez Police Department and Montezuma Crimestoppers, the burglar made off with a 180-pound safe and its contents from the building.

The safe contained currency valued at $3,332, and itself had an approximate value of $1,080.

The movie house took another hit in the form of property damage estimated at $100.

A report filed by Officer Danny Dufur noted damage at the business’ rear door, where he had observed "five pry marks on the framing," and a dent in the door jam.

Footprints, along with scuffs and scrape marks, pointed to the path the perpetrator or perpetrators had taken out of the building, but not to the alleged culprits themselves, the report said.

An employee who arrived to clean at 8:40 that morning noticed that the safe was gone, and immediately informed her manager, Kathryn Shethar, who summoned the police. According to the report, Shethar informed officers that the building had been secured at about 12:30 a.m.

Anyone with information concerning this crime is asked to call the Cortez Police Department at 565-8441, or Crimestoppers at 565-4243.
