Winter road construction spells delays at park

Nov. 2, 2000

CORTEZ JOURNAL

From now until April 2001, visitors to Mesa Verde National Park should expect construction delays of up to 15 minutes along the park road as they travel from the entrance to the Far View area.

Nielsons, Inc., is the contractor for a highway construction project to correct a slumping road bench at Milepost 8.6 (just across from the road construction of this summer).

The work includes moving the road 4 meters into the hill, next to the road, for a distance of 100 meters.

Visitors should expect delays of up to five minutes while construction is under way.

If all goes as planned, this project will be completed by the end of November (weather permitting). Drivers will need to be especially careful moving through the construction site, because of heavy equipment working throughout the area.

Sometime in mid-November, Nielsons will also be rebuilding the hillside at the uphill grade at Milepost 3.0.

This will be a large project that will last through April 2001. During construction, the road will be one-way traffic for about 200 meters with traffic signals set up at five-minute cycles,

There will be lots of heavy truck traffic into and out of the park during this time as well. All drivers will need to use extra caution when driving the park road.

There will be a one- or two-week time period when both construction projects are under way at once.

During this time, two delays should be expected, but the contractor will stop traffic for a total combined delay of no more than 15 minutes.
