Oct. 5, 2000 BY MATT GLECKMAN A Dolores man was pronounced dead Monday morning after his vehicle rolled on Highway 145 north of Rico. Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Bill Whitcomb said that James R. Taylor, 62, was driving his 1985 Toyota pickup north on Colorado Highway 145 around 9 a.m. when he drove off the road for 160 feet. "The driver then over-corrected, turning left back onto the road, and (the vehicle) spun counter-clockwise and rolled one time for 203 feet, coming to rest on its wheels on the west side of the road," said Whitcomb. Whitcomb said that he was not aware of the pickup’s estimated speed at the time of the incident but added that Taylor must have been driving relatively fast in order to roll only once for such a long distance. "It’s hard to believe that he could only roll once for 203 feet," he said. According to the state patrol report, Whitcomb was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene from massive head injuries, the report said. Whitcomb said drugs and alcohol did not appear to play a role in the accident. |
