Sept. 28, 2000 BY MATT GLECKMAN Business owners and residents adjacent to the Safeway construction area have recently complained about problems with dust and mud near the site. Because of an uneven surface area, the R & O Construction Company is bringing in 40,000 cubic feet of fill dirt in order to level the ground, which has caused a lot of dust to be kicked into the air, said Cortez Building Inspector Wade Greene. "As much as we can possibly do (to mitigate the dust problem) we have done. However, there is going to be some dust simply because it is a part that goes along with construction," Greene said. Greene said that the complaints have been divided about 50-50 between nearby residents and business owners. "It’s an aggravation, so to speak, for people who have to live (and work) around the area," he said. "We have had some complaints about the dust being airborne and with others we have heard complaints about it being on the streets." Val Wheelwright, superintendent of R & O Construction, said that as a result of the complaints the city has begun sweeping the streets around the Safeway construction site every morning and the construction company has been wetting down the dirt. City Manager Hal Shepherd said the city is doing everything it can to minimize the problem. "We can’t eliminate it," Shepherd said. "We have tried to wet down the dirt but then it turns to mud and we have an even bigger problem." Wheelwright estimated that the construction company would be hauling dirt to the Safeway site for approximately another three weeks. |
