CORTEZ JOURNAL For the third time in five years, a Montezuma County woman has been named Colorado Cattlewoman of the Year. Leona McCabe, a lifetime resident of the county and a 50-year member of the Southwestern Cowbelles, was named at a conference Tuesday for both the Colorado Cattlewomen’s Association and the Cowbelles. "I was really surprised," she said. "It took my breath away. It was an honor and I appreciate it very much." She will be honored at the mid-winter Colorado Cattlemen’s and Cattlewomen’s associations conference in Nov. 16 to be held in Colorado Springs. In nominating her for the award, the Southwestern Cowbelles wrote, "Believing that the livestock industry is of basic importance to world existence, Leona is a true beef ambassador. . . . Leona keeps informed on issues that affect the cattle industry and she is politicially active in addressing them." McCabe has served in nearly every office in the Cowbelles, including president, secretary, treasurer and historian. She is now chairwoman of the group’s nominating committee for life memberships. She and her husband of 60 years, Stanley, own 400 head of cattle and live on a ranch at Summit Ridge. Both are descended from pioneer ranching families. They are helped in their ranching operation by their grandson, John McHenry IV.
Faye Bertrand of Montezuma County was named Cattlewoman of the Year two years ago, and another local resident, Ida Jean Wancura, earned the honor in 1995. |
