Park reopens Friday; Hopi dances set for weekend

Mesa Verde National Park is scheduled to reopen Friday at 6 a.m. From that date through Friday, Aug. 18, the park will not charge an entrance fee.

All of the ranger-guided tours and self-guided areas on both Chapin and Wetherill mesas will be open and operating on the usual summer schedule. The Far View Visitor Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum will be open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The ticket system for tours of the cliff dwellings will remain in place, with tickets costing $1.75 per person per tour.

A Mesa Verde tradition will continue with ceremonial Hopi dances on Saturday, Aug. 5, and Sunday, Aug. 6. Flora Lomayestewa will lead traditional dances in the old stone amphitheater on Chapin Mesa near the Archaeological Museum. Commercial photography will not be permitted. Dances will take place both days at 11 a.m., noon, and 2 and 4 p.m.
