Journal Staff Report

Slippery road conditions on U.S. Highway 666 north of Cortez Saturday night appeared to be the cause of a two-vehicle accident which claimed the life of a 28-year-old Lewis woman.

Tina Marie Papoff was pronounced dead at 10:35 Saturday evening after suffering internal injuries during the accident, according to the Colorado State Patrol report.

The report said that Papoff was traveling north on U.S. Highway 666 when her Ford pickup began to hydroplane on the wet road surface, skidded counter-clockwise a quarter turn, crossed the median line and collided with a second vehicle.

The report said that Papoff was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The second vehicle, which was southbound at the time of the accident, was driven by 41-year-old Richard Rogers and carrying 37-year-old Karen Rogers, both from Eckert, Colo.

The report said that following the collision, Rogers’ vehicle rotated a quarter turn before coming to rest on its wheels facing south.

Rescue units from the Colorado State Patrol, Southwest Memorial Hospital and the Cortez Fire Department responded to the scene and worked to extricate Papoff from the vehicle.

Both occupants of the southbound vehicle were transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where Richard Rogers was treated for bruising and Karen Rogers was treated for minor abrasions.

Both of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts and had their airbags deploy during the collision.

Funeral services for Papoff will be held Thursday, July 13, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will be held at the Arriola cemetery.
