A 12-year-old handicapped boy died Sunday afternoon in Towaoc after becoming trapped in a fire that started in his bedroom, reported the Ute Mountain Ute Police.

Just before 4 p.m. Ute Mountain police and fire departments responded within 13 minutes to 1107 North Bear Dance Road in Towaoc after receiving a call from a 16-year- old baby-sitter who was watching three children there.

Three other occupants of the home managed to escape the blaze, which was contained to the bedroom, according to Ute Mountain Police Chief Dusty Whiting. Attempts were made to rescue the victim, but they were unsuccessful.

"The fire was just too intense," Whiting said.

The incident, which also caused "severe damage" to the home, is being investigated by Ute Mountain police and fire departments. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, according to police.

Whiting declined to identify the boy, but other sources said his name was Marty Price.
