June 24, 2000 BY MATT GLECKMAN Three accident victims were listed in conditions ranging from stable to serious on Friday, a day after an ambulance struck another vehicle and rolled on U.S. Highway 666 near Yellow Jacket. Six people were injured in the accident Thursday afternoon when a Dove Creek ambulance carrying a patient to Southwest Memorial Hospital struck another vehicle that was attempting to turn north onto the highway from County Road Z. Colorado State Patrol Trooper Joseph Wilson, who is investigating the case, said Friday that Ota Yoichi, 60, of Kanagawa, Japan, was attempting to turn his 2000 Ford Taurus left onto Highway 666 in Yellow Jacket when the southbound ambulance struck the left rear section of his vehicle. According to the report, the ambulance was driving with its emergency overhead lights on but without its siren. Wilson said that Yoichi’s vehicle spun and came to rest, while the ambulance spun counter-clockwise and rolled 1 1/4 times before coming to rest in a ditch along the southbound lane. The ambulance, driven by EMT supervisor Robert (Allan) Anderson, was carrying EMT Marvin Pemberton, 28, patient Carolyn Howell, 61, and her daughter Carol Howell, 31, all of Dove Creek. Both Anderson and Carolyn Howell were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, however, Pemberton and Carol Howell were not, Wilson said. All four of the ambulance’s occupants were transported by other local ambulances to Southwest Memorial Hospital. Dolores County Sheriff Jerry Martin said Friday that Yoichi was transported from the accident scene by helicopter to the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. Ronda Wood, a San Juan Medical Center spokesperson, said that Yoichi was listed by the hospital in fair condition Friday afternoon. Wilson said that Anderson and Carol Howell were treated at the hospital and released on Thursday. Pemberton received a fractured clavicle and a contusion and was listed in serious condition after being admitted to the hospital overnight. Wilson said that Carolyn Howell was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Southwest Memorial on Thursday but was unsure if the woman was admitted as a result of injuries sustained during the rollover. Carolyn Howell was being transported to Southwest Memorial for a diagnostic procedure when the accident occurred. According Wilson, Yoichi was also carrying a passenger, Minami Hitoshi, 39, also of Kanagawa, Japan. Hitoshi was treated for chest pain and released. Both occupants were wearing their seatbelts, Wilson said. Wilson said that no drugs or alcohol appeared to play a role in the accident, but said that Yoichi will be cited for careless driving causing serious bodily injury and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. Neither of the drivers could remember how fast they were going at the time of the accident, so some calculations will have to be done before the investigation is complete, Wilson said. However, Martin said that he didn’t think that speeding was the cause of the accident. Judging by the severity of the damage to both vehicles, Wilson said he was amazed the accident had not ended more tragically. "Given the circumstances and the momentum that was created from this, you would think that the injuries would have been a lot more serious, and I’m sure glad that they’re not," Wilson said. |
