June 20, 2000 Journal Staff Report A man wanted for eluding officers after allegedly assaulting a woman with a blunt object was apprehended Saturday at the Ute Mountain Casino in Towaoc. Sherman Scott, 18, was captured by Ute Mountain Ute Police after an anonymous caller tipped off authorities to Scott’s whereabouts, according to Ute Mountain Police Chief Dusty Whiting. Scott is being held in the Towaoc jail pending a court hearing. Scott, who was on probation at the time of the alleged assault, was featured in the Montezuma Valley Journal in September 1999 after being captured by Towaoc police for escaping the McKinley County Youth Detention Center in Gallup, N.M., on July 8, 1999. Scott, a Ute Mountain Tribal member, also managed to escape the confines of the Towaoc jail facility in June, 1999. He was being sought for violating probation on a previous domestic assault charge involving the same victim, Whiting said. The latest alleged assault is being investigated by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Pending results, the case will be presented to the U.S. Attorney’s office. |
