June 17, 2000 Journal Staff Report A young Towaoc man known for repeatedly escaping the long arm of the law is being sought by authorities in connection with an alleged assault. Sherman Scott, 18, is suspected of attacking a woman Wednesday night at a residence in Towaoc with a "blunt and edged weapon," according to Ute Mountain Ute Police Chief Dusty Whiting. The victim was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital where she is being treated in the intensive care unit for serious head injuries, according to police. "He engaged officers in a short foot-chase at the scene but managed to escape into the nearby brush," Whiting said. "I would consider him armed and dangerous. He is not someone you want to approach." Scott, who was on probation at the time of the alleged assault, was featured in the Montezuma Valley Journal in September 1999 after being captured by Towaoc police for escaping the McKinley County Youth Detention Center in Gallup New Mexico on July 8, 1999. Scott, a Ute Mountain Tribal member, also managed to escape the confines of the Towaoc jail facility in June, 1999. He is being sought for violating probation on a previous domestic assault charge involving the same victim, Whiting said. The latest alleged assault is being investigated by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Pending results, the case will be presented to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Scott reportedly has relatives in Cortez and was recently seen at City Market and Wal-Mart, according to police. Anyone recognizing Scott, described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds, with a ruddy complexion, is asked to contact either the Towaoc Police at 565-3706, the Cortez Police at 565-8441 or the Montezuma County Sheriff’s office at 565-8444. |
