A man accused of kidnapping his own 15-month-old daughter and assaulting his ex-girlfriend was behind bars Wednesday in Cortez after surrendering at the Durango Police Department earlier this week.

John B. Coleman, 33, of New Orleans, La., is being held in the Montezuma County Jail on a $250,000 bond for suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, a class 4 felony, and third-degree assault.

"(Coleman) walked into the Durango Police Department Monday afternoon and was later transferred here to be served with a Montezuma County warrant," Montezuma County Sheriff’s Det. Steve Harmon said Tuesday.

According to a Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office report, Coleman allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Davis, and took his daughter while mother and daughter were leaving the Mancos High School graduation ceremonies at the Mancos Performance Center on May 21.

Following the alleged attack, Coleman managed to elude police for several weeks, spurring a nationwide search.

On Friday, Montezuma County Sheriff’s detectives learned that the baby had been left in the care of Coleman’s mother in Louisiana; three days later Coleman surrendered himself in Durango.

A Montezuma County Court clerk said Wednesday that Coleman was advised of the charges against him on Tuesday and is set for another court appearance on June 14.
