June 8, 2000 Journal staff report A decision was finally reached Tuesday about the allocation of a section of school district land to the City of Cortez that will be used as a trailhead for a recreational walking and biking trail. School board members and city officials have been negotiating an agreement about the allocation of a portion of land at Mesa School for several months. In December of last year, the City of Cortez received a grant to fund a recreation trail. The Mesa School land is intended to be the start of a 1 1/2-mile non-motorized recreation trail that will circle the city. School board members voted Tuesday to approve a plan for the allocation of the land to the city. Several guidelines will have to be met by the city before the school board will actually allocate the easement. School District Re-1 Superintendent Bill Thompson explained that the city has to have a legal description of the property that the trail will take from the district and the city must agree to fence the length of the trail that passes through school property. "Once these guidelines are met, the board will sign the agreement," Thompson said. |
