June 6, 2000 Jenn Ooton Journal Summer Intern Not only can you get feed for your livestock at Colorado Hay Feed Mill, but you can pick up a pet for your home or get your pet groomed. Late last year, Don and Dee Wood started expanding their feed business to include a pet store. "In December we started carrying furry animals and birds," Don said. "Two to three months ago, we started carrying tropical fish." Within a few weeks, the Woods added cat and dog grooming to their list of services. At Petpourri, located in the same building as Colorado Hay, the Woods sell hedgehogs, hamsters, chicks, turkeys, fish, parakeets, parrots, ferrets, mice, and all types of pet supplies. "It’s a feed store and more," Dee Wood explained. The Woods have been in the area selling feed for swine, cattle, horses, and even wild birds for 13 years. Their feed is milled at Lewis, north of Cortez, and is made up of oats, barley, and hay grown by the local agricultural community. According to Don Wood, the Woods decided to add pet sales to their business when people came to them asking for information about where to buy small animals. "We used to farm and ranch outside of Yellow Jacket, more and more people were asking about information for small animals....We sort of branched out," Don said. Colorado Hay Feed Mill and Petpourri are located at 50 Henry St. in Cortez. |
