June 6, 2000 Journal Staff report A spokesman for Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt said Monday that the secretary’s recommendation for the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument will include protection for grazing rights. The Interior Department’s original news release stipulated the development of mining rights, but failed to mention grazing. John Wright, a spokesman for Babbitt, said the omission of references to grazing in the management statement released last week was simply an oversight. "It’s my understanding that those activities that were allowed prior to designation will continue, with the exception of logging and drilling," Wright said. "A lot of these things hinge upon a couple of things - designation and the proclamation - but for the most part hunting and grazing are still activities that will continue on designated national monuments." |
