Memorial Day weekend travelers and construction workers will get a break from delays and dust.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will suspend construction from Friday through Monday, but will begin again in earnest on Tuesday.

The major points of construction scheduled for this summer on the San Juan Skyway are located on U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango and Colorado Highway 145 south of Telluride.

From 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, the right lane of westbound traffic will be closed from Wildcat Canyon to Cherry Creek outside of Durango.

CDOT will also be doing some minor resurfacing of Highway 145 south of Telluride, 13 miles north of Lizard Head Pass, once a contract is awarded in June.

Several other highways, besides the San Juan Skyway, are also undergoing renovations this summer. On U.S. Highway 160 about 14 miles east of Bayfield, motorists can expect delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions.

Contracts will be awarded for construction on U.S. Highway 666 from Cahone to the Utah border in July.

However, local tourism operators are still optimistic about summer tourism in the area.

"It’s frustrating and certainly it’s a delay, but I don’t think it has much impact on whether people come or not," said Lynn Dyer, tourism director of the Montezuma County Economic Development Council.
