Journal Staff Report

Law enforcement officials are searching the Four Corners area for a Louisiana man accused of kidnapping his own 15-month-old daughter during the Mancos High School graduation on Sunday.

John B. Coleman, 33, of New Orleans, La., allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend, 26-year-old Jennifer Davis, while Davis was leaving the Mancos Performance Center during the graduation ceremonies, according to a report filed by Montezuma County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel L. Pope.

Davis said Monday that she was walking down the steps leading from the performance center with her daughter, Aniston Coleman, when she was struck in the middle of her back and knocked to the concrete. When she got up, Davis said she saw Coleman running with Aniston toward an alley on the north side of the building.

Coleman fled with Aniston in a dark sport-utility vehicle, according to the report.

Davis told Pope that she and Aniston left Louisiana about a week ago to escape abuse that she was allegedly receiving from Coleman. Because Davis was frightened that Coleman might come looking for her and Aniston, she checked with Coleman’s relatives in Louisiana to make sure that he was still there before deciding to attend her half-sister’s graduation in Mancos, according to Sandy Bazile, a friend of the family.

Davis listed a Durango address for both herself and Aniston, and Aniston was born in Durango, according to the report.

Coleman, who possesses outdoor survival skills, lived in Durango for a short period when Aniston was born and frequented the X-Rock climbing area, Davis said.

Davis said the attack occurred while she was taking Aniston outside because the child had become restless during the graduation ceremonies.

Davis told Pope that she fears for her own safety and for the safety of Aniston, whom Davis was breast-feeding up to four times a day.

Coleman has an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest from Park County, Colo., and is now also wanted for second-degree kidnapping, third-degree assault, and domestic violence.

Coleman is described as a Caucasian male about 5-feet 9-inches tall with long, brown hair and brown eyes. He is also reported to have a tattoo on his left arm and a scar over his right eye, as well as a scar on his back where he was once shot, according to Pope’s report.

If you have any information about the incident, please contact the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office at 565-8444.
