Mancos seats a new town board

April 15, 2000

BY TOM VAUGHAN

The "new" Mancos Town Board took office Wednesday evening. Only Trustee Vernon Harrell is truly new to the board; Mayor Greg Rath and Trustees Ray Martinez, Paul Christensen and Diana Hershberger were all trustees on the last board.

The two vacancies on the board, created by the resignation of Trustee Jim Verghis and Rath’s move from trustee to mayor, will be filled through applications and interviews. Though some (including Rath) had suggested the next highest vote-getters in the recent election should be named to those positions, the board unanimously approved Chris-tensen’s motion to advertise the positions and request letters of application.

Taking office midway in the selection process for a new town manager, the board moved to defer a decision until Town Attorney Cliff Fossum could be there to advise them. Fossum had been called to Albuquerque on an emergency.

The board expressed support for the Colorado Department of Transporta-tion’s (CDOT) safety improvements around the US 160/Colorado 184 intersection. Public Works Director Bill Kroeker reported a two-week time frame for the flashing light to be installed over the intersection. The board will request Richard Reynolds, Regional Transportation Engineer for Region 5, to be present at their May 10 meeting. They also authorized a letter to CDOT requesting westward extension of the 40 m.p.h. speed limit on U.S. 160 and "Right Turn Only" signs on US 160 at its intersection with Colorado 184.
