April 11, 2000 By Matt Gleckman A California man was listed in stable condition Monday after he and two others were involved in a one-car rollover Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 666 north of Cortez. Edwin Ludwig IV, 20, of Riverbank, Calif., was driving south on Highway 666 when the left, rear tire of his highly-decorated Ford sedan popped, causing him to loose control of his car, slide backwards off the highway and roll over onto an embankment, a Colorado State Patrol trooper said Friday. The incident, which occurred at approximately 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, brought on a large-scale rescue effort from the Colorado State Patrol, the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis-Arriola and Pleasant View fire departments and many local volunteers. Colorado State Patrol Trooper Don Shepherd, who investigated the accident, estimated that the car rolled over approximately 1 & 1/4 times before finally coming to rest on its right side. The force of the rollover caused several items from inside the car as well as many of the plastic ornaments glued to the hood and roof of the car to be scattered along the highway’s shoulder. The driver and one of the passengers were immediately taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital complaining of head, neck and rib injuries. A second passenger had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life before medical attention could be administered to him, said Shepherd. On Monday, a Southwest Memorial Hospital representative said that Ludwig and one of his passengers, Daniel Tuttel, were treated for minor injuries and released. The spokesperson said that the second passenger, Mike Tuttel, was treated for a nose fracture, abrasions and a back injury. He was listed at the hospital Monday in stable condition and was expected to be released late Monday. Shepherd said that alcohol and drugs did not appear to play a role in the incident. "Judging by the witness’ statement and the damage to the rear tire, this appears to be a pretty straightforward case," said Shepherd. |
