April 1, 2000 By Jim Mimiaga A White Mesa man was severely injured Thursday at a residence in Towaoc after being struck in the head by a 20-pound dumbbell during a domestic fight involving several people, the Ute Mountain police reported Friday. Devon Whiskers, 26, of White Mesa, was listed Friday in stable condition at Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, N.M., according to a hospital spokesperson. A Ute Mountain police officer patrolling the neighborhood on foot around 4:30 p.m. discovered Whiskers lying unconscious at a residence on Sundance Drive. The homeowner was absent. Subsequent police interviews revealed that a brawl had taken place between two groups, most of whom fled the scene prior to officers arriving, according to Ute Mountain Police Chief Dusty Whiting. Witnesses described a fight that escalated and then ended after a dumbbell was used against Whiskers, who was first transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital for head trauma and then to the Shiprock facility, Whiting said. No charges have been filed in the assault, pending the results of the investigation and whether Whiskers improves or not, Whiting said. Two male suspects directly involved in the incident voluntarily went to police shortly after the fight ended. "We know the majority of the facts and circumstances because everyone came forward and cooperated really well," Whiting said. He said alcohol was not a "predominant factor" at the scene. "The majority of people were sober; however, the victim was intoxicated." Two witnesses were arrested for intoxication at the scene, and others involved may be charged with lesser offenses relating to the incident, Whiting said. |
