A Dolores man was arrested Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting two teen-age girls at his residence following an alcohol-fueled party east of Cortez Tuesday night.

Kevin Arlen Kartchner, 21, remained in jail on a $100,000 bond Friday after being advised in Montezuma County Court of charges that include first-degree sexual assault on a helpless victim, a Class 3 felony, and sexual assault on a child, a Class 4 felony.

The girls, one of middle-school age and one of high-school age, had been reported missing Tuesday night, according to an affidavit by Montezuma County Sheriff’s Detective Steve Harmon requesting the arrest warrant.

Kartchner, described as 6-foot-2-inches tall and weighing 185 pounds, is accused of having intercourse with one girl while she was passed out drunk, according to the affidavit, and of having intercourse with the other, three years younger, against her will.

The younger girl told Harmon that Kartchner had driven them to his residence on County Road 27 from the party, according to the affidavit, purportedly to get coffee for the older girl, who was extremely intoxicated.

But instead, he took them into a room that contained only a bed and a toolbox, the girl told Harmon, where he proceeded to undress and rape her.

The girl then left the room to use the phone, the affidavit said, apparently to summon help, and when she returned Kartchner was "having his way" with the other girl, who appeared unconscious.

When the mother of the older girl arrived with police a short time later, she saw Kartchner standing in the residence wearing only underwear and socks, the affidavit said. The woman said the girls and the suspect were the only people at the residence, the affidavit added.

The older girl’s mother picked out Kartchner’s picture from a photo line-up, the affidavit said, and both alleged victims chose his picture as one of two possible suspects.

Because such charges are considered "extraordinary risk crimes," District Attorney Mike Green explained Friday, Kartchner is facing possible imprisonment of up to 16 years on the Class 3 felony, and eight years on the Class 4 felony if convicted.
