A suspect in the Feb. 10 shooting death of Kenneth Wayne Dugan III turned himself in to the Montezuma County sheriff’s department late Wednesday morning, according to authorities, while a second man is being sought in connection with the homicide.

Mathew David Gray, 23, was being held in the county jail on $100,000 bond Wednesday afternoon, according to a district court clerk and was to be advised of unspecified charges either late Wednesday or Thursday.

Another apparent suspect, Douglas Jay Hackett, 28, "is currently being sought in this homicide," according to a news release released Wednesday by the sheriff’s office. The release did not include any information about any charges Hackett may face.

The arrest warrants issued in the case have been sealed by District Judge Sharon Hansen at the request of District Attorney Mike Green.

Dugan, 22, was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest at the rural home of his ex-wife, Lindy Kennedy Dugan, shortly after midnight Feb. 10, according to an affidavit filed last week by Detective Lt. Kalvin Boggs that was seeking a search warrant for the residence.

Hackett was living with Kennedy Dugan in a trailer on Road 25 north of Cortez, according to the affidavit. Dugan had reportedly gone to the site with three friends to help his ex-wife evict Hackett from the trailer.

According to the affidavit, a friend of Dugan’s, Jeff Libertus, told Boggs that he had been standing next to Dugan that night in the yard outside a camp trailer near the larger trailer rented by Hackett and Kennedy Dugan. Gray and Shanna Dawn Fletcher, 22, lived in the camp trailer.

During a general argument among the people at the site, Libertus said, Dugan told Fletcher to pack her things and leave the premises. She then said, "Where’s my (expletive) gun?" and, a moment later, Libertus heard a shot and felt Dugan slump against him, Libertus told Boggs, according to the affidavit.

Fletcher, Gray and Hackett all left the scene before police arrived.

Fletcher, who has not been charged with any offenses in connection with the homicide, appeared at the county court office Wednesday morning in connection with an old warrant for failure to appear for a traffic offense, according to a clerk at the office. Fletcher posted a small bond and was released.
