Feb. 10, 2000 BY DAVID GRANT LONG Montezuma County's second homicide victim of the year was shot to death early Thursday morning, allegedly by a woman the man was attempting to evict from his ex-wife's rural residence. Kenneth Wayne Dugan, 22, of Cortez, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest after being taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital from the scene of the shooting on County Road 25, according to an affidavit for a search warrant written by Detective Lt. Kalvin Boggs of the Montezuma County Sheriff's Department. According to Boggs' affidavit, one witness to the slaying who had gone to the residence with Dugan identified his alleged killer as 22-year-old Shanna Dawn Fletcher. Fletcher and several other people were being sought by police for questioning, but no arrests had been made as of Thursday evening. Another friend of the victim told police that Dugan had asked the suspect, who was standing in the doorway of her camp trailer, to pack her things and leave when she apparently retrieved a gun from inside and a shot was fired. The witness said although he had not actually seen Fletcher fire the fatal shot, he heard it while standing next to the victim, then felt Dugan slump into him and saw a red stain forming on his chest. The witnesses attempted to administer first aid to Dugan while driving him to Southwest Memorial Hospital, but was unable to save him. According to a hospital spokeswoman, he arrived at Southwest at 12:35 a.m. and was pronounced dead 10 minutes later, despite efforts to revive him. |
