Jan. 19, 2002 The Cortez Journal is among the nominees in the 13th Annual GLAAD Media Awards competition. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced recently that the Journal is one of five candidates in the nation nominated in the category "Outstanding Newspaper Overall Coverage." Also nominated in the same category are USA Today, The Roanoke Times, Newsday and The Village Voice. The GLAAD Media Awards were created to "honor individuals and projects in the media and entertainment industries for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community and the issues that affect their lives," according to a GLAAD press release. The awards will take place in three ceremonies to be held in New York City on April 1, at the New York Marriott Marquis; in Los Angeles on April 13, at the Kodak Theater at Hollywood and Highland; and in San Francisco on June 1 at the Westin St. Francis. This year GLAAD expects more than 6,000 attendees at the three ceremonies, raising more than $2.5 million for the organization’s work. The Journal was nominated for its coverage of the murder of Fred Martinez Jr., a 16-year-old gay or transgendered Navajo who was found bludgeoned to death June 21 in a rocky canyon south of Cortez.
