Jan. 15, 2000 BY DAVID GRANT LONG Murder charges are expected to be filed against a Cortez man Tuesday in the shooting death of his roommate earlier this week, Police Chief Roy Lane said yesterday, although the suspect has made no statement implicating himself. "Its pretty obvious to us who did the shooting," he said. "Its one of those (cases) thats pretty cut-and-dried, but we dont actually know a whole lot yet. "The suspect that we have is the shooter." Bradley Scott Cassels, 46, was arrested late Tuesday after calling 911 to report a shooting at his residence at 111 Pinon Drive, Lane recounted, coming out the door with his hands in the air upon the arrival of police. Inside the house officers found the bloody body of 38-year-old Greg Allen Morris, who had been shot "multiple times," Lane said, apparently with a 9-mm handgun found at the scene. But after surrendering and being advised of his Miranda rights, he explained, Cassels "lawyered up" and refused to be interviewed by investigators. Rumors that the slaying was sparked by a clash over money have not been verified, Lane said, although some sort of altercation had taken place. "Weve never heard about money," he said. "We know that there had been an argument they argued earlier in the day." Lane said he had no additional knowledge about the length or depth of the suspects and victims relationship. Lane said alcohol was involved in the incident, but the suspects degree of intoxication had not yet been determined. "There appeared to have been some drinking going on," he said. |
