Jan. 3, 2001 Journal Staff Report A head-on crash involving alcohol on U.S. Highway 666 on New Year’s Day ended with injuries and a short manhunt, state police reported. Details are sketchy, but the wreck reportedly occurred on the Ute Mountain Reservation, 1.5 miles north of the New Mexico state line. Since it involved a Native American, the accident was handled by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, but the federal agency would not release any information about it. Highway 666 is a U.S. roadway. However, according to a Colorado State Patrol trooper who responded to the scene, a passenger vehicle heading southbound apparently swerved head-on into an oncoming semi tractor-trailor. The driver of the passenger vehicle then fled on foot from the scene and was apprehended a short time later by BIA police at a nearby residence, said Trooper David Van Bibber. Road blockage was significant, he said. According to the state patrol, when the man was apprehended, he appeared intoxicated. They said that alcohol was a probable contributor in the crash. At least one person was injured in the crash and was transported to Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock. Names, health conditions or traffic charges were not released by the agencies involved.
