Fire destroys trailer home

December 20, 2001

A Cortez family lost their trailer home Sunday when a fire of undetermined origin swept through it.

The fire at 5455 County Road 25, the home of Alfred and Dena Romero and their children, was called in at 11:47 a.m. Sunday, according to Frank Cavaliere, fire marshal with the Cortez Fire Protection District.

"When our apparatus got on the scene, the trailer was fully involved," he said. "It was a total loss."

He said the cause of the blaze had yet to be determined, but it originated from inside the trailer. No one was injured in the fire and no other structures were threatened, he said.

"The father was asleep in one bedroom. The kids said, ‘There’s a fire’ and everybody got out," Cavaliere said.

Two engines, four tankers and 16 volunteers with the fire district responded, he said.

Alfred Romero is an unloader at the Wal-Mart Superstore and Dena works in the photo department there, a Wal-Mart spokesperson said.

The Romeros could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
