December 13, 2001 Lyle Cox announced his retirement as fire chief during the monthly Mancos Fire District business meeting on Dec. 3. At the beginning of 2002, Assistant Fire Chief Tony Aspromonte will step into the chief’s job. "I just decided it’s time," Cox said Tuesday. First elected in 1976, he’s looking forward to going back to being a rookie. In addition to his other duties as a fireman and first responder, Cox said he will continue to be the point man for the Mancos Fire Department in its ongoing dispute with Cedar Mesa Estates over fire facilities in the subdivision across from the entrance to Mesa Verde.
