December 6, 2001 Three Montezuma County projects were awarded $865,000 in Energy and Mineral Impact grants this year. In Cortez, the yet-to-be-built city recreation center received $500,000. City officials said the money will be used to build two racquetball courts and help pay down the $8.9 million bond. Mancos received $65,000 to help plan the Mancos Valley Clinic, which will provide low-cost medical care for the entire county and the Four Corners area. The clinic could be built next year if other funding comes through. The Dolores Town Library received $300,000 for a proposed expansion, but the money will be held in trust because the district’s mill-levy increase failed in the November election. In all, $2,119,200 was awarded to seven projects in the southwestern region of the state. The Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance program helps communities offset the direct impacts of energy and mineral development and meet other needs indirectly related to such development. The funds are administered by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.
