Jan. 8, 2000 Journal Staff Report No sure what to do with all of that non-perishable food and supplies you stocked up on now that Y2K has come and gone with nary a flicker? Donate that overstock to the Cortez Good Samaritan Center and help out someone in need, suggests director Cindy Irvin. "People in this community have really come through this year. I think that it shows that we have a lot of faith," she said. "If people want they can donate some of (that stockpile.)" More donations are always needed, especially jackets for children and adults, and warm blankets in good shape. Last year the Center assisted more than 3,000 people with food, clothing, or other needs such as lodging, transportation and prescription refills. Thats 804 families and some 75 transients seeking assistance in order to get them through lean times just in the past year. The center also provides counseling, spiritual advice, and direction to Social Service programs in the area. The volunteer crew at the Cortez Good Samaritan extends a heartfelt thanks to all those businesses, schools, restaurants, organizations, families and individuals who gave so graciously this year. "Thank you to our giving community, thank you a million. May God continue to use each of us in a mighty way to glorify Him," wrote Irvin in a year end report. "As the director, I am privileged to work with the best servants of God, 33 faithful volunteers serving out of the goodness of their hearts giving, caring, and energetically doing. We all attend different churches yet we have the common goal of blessing the less fortunate in our community." The Cortez Good Samaritan Center is located at 24 1/2 South Elm, P.O. Box 662, Cortez, 81321. Donations can be dropped off at the Center. Hours are noon to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number is 565-6424. |
