Local video producer wins award

Winning the gold in Salt Lake City isn’t just a dream for Olympic hopefuls — it’s a reality for a local video producer.

In October, David Bowyer of David Bowyer Productions, saw his docudrama, "Legends of Navajo Country," win the gold at the 2001 Aurora Awards.

The international film festival is held yearly in Salt Lake, and draws big-name producers.

Bowyer competed for top honors with 26 other producers, including Disney, A&E and the History Channel.

"This proves you don’t have to live in Hollywood to win awards," Bowyer said.

Although it was the first time his company entered the Auroras, Bowyer is no stranger to the winners’ circle.

At the Intercom Film Festival in Chicago, the company won for "Zwicker: An American Cowboy."

The Aurora Gold Award "puts the icing on the cake," Bowyer said.

"I wasn’t expecting it. It’s a nice surprise when you’re not expecting something."

Legends of Navajo Country aired recently on PBS. A full review is planned for the Journal’s next Arts page. Copies are available from David Bowyer Productions, 565-3971.
