Hunters to share FBI reward for finding fugitive

Jan. 6, 2000

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Eleven people who stumbled on the remains of Four Corners fugitive Alan Lamont Pilon on Oct. 31 will share a $150,000 reward.

Pilon, Robert Mason and Jason Wayne McVean had been sought for the murder of Cortez, Colo., police officer Dale Claxton in May.

The trio was also wanted for wounding two Montezuma County sheriff’s deputies and a National Park Service employee in Utah. They were the subject of a large manhunt involving hundreds of officers.

Mason was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the shootings.

McVean remains at large.

Pilon’s skeletal remains were found by deer hunters in southeastern Utah. He had a broken ankle and died of a gunshot wound, which was believed self-inflicted, San Juan County Sheriff Mike Lacy said.

The 11 recipients will receive cash rewards during a ceremony on Friday, the FBI said Monday in a news release that did not name the recipients.
