Legion invites citizens to Veterans Day ceremony

November 8, 2001

By the American Legion

On Sunday, Nov. 11, we ask you to please join with us in prayer for our nation, our leaders and our service men and women.

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I ended in 1918. This was to be the war to end all wars. We all know it was not. World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Panama, Lebanon and Desert Storm all called upon a new group of patriots to answer their nation’s call to arms and to defend our liberty. Many died that we might live.

Nov. 11 is the date that we, as a nation, set aside to remember those veterans — men and women — who have served and are now serving in our military. In years gone by, many of them gave their live that we might live as "One Nation Under God."

Today we should pray for those who fought for our freedom and also for the families of those whose lives were given to pay for this liberty that we enjoy today.

On Sept. 11 we watched in horror as two hijacked airliners were flown by terrorists into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. In disbelief, we watched as another airliner was crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and another into a farm field in Pennsylvania. As a nation, we mourn the terrible loss of life. As a nation, our hearts go out to the many families that have suffered the loss of a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, or a close friend. Words cannot fully nor adequately express our sorrow and grief.

On Nov. 11 we pray for the families of those who lost thier lives in this devastating attack against America.

A new group of young men and women are answering the call of their nation to bring to justice those who perpetrated this act of terror. They are a new group of patriots that will train and fight for our freedom.

On this Veterans Day, we ask that you join us in prayer for God to protect these new warriors. We also urge you to take time to thank those veterans, the warriors of wars past, for their service to this great nation.

We ask you today to join with us in prayer for our President, our nation, and our new brave young patriots.

The Veterans Day ceremony will be Sunday at 7 a.m. at the Post Home, 320 N. Harrison, and will be followed by a country-style breakfast.
