November 7, 2001 Mancos voters nixed a three-year mill-levy increase that proponents say would have helped the district deal with, among other things, soaring utilities costs, maintenance and replacement of outdated technology, and special-needs students in Re-6 schools. "This would go a long way in the effort to keep up with our rapidly growing operational costs," Connie Garcia Blanchard, superintendent of the Mancos schools, wrote of the measure in a recent edition of the Mancos Times. But Ballot Measure 3A was shot down by 56.81 percent of eligible voters, with 371 saying nay and 282 saying aye. The measure stipulated a mill-levy increase of 2.16 mills to provide an estimated $62,325 extra per year — an additional $19.67 in taxes per year per $100,000 of a home or property’s assessed valuation. None of the measure’s proponents or opponents was available for comment late Tuesday night. |
