A retired U S West/Qwest communications manager from Montrose has announced his intention to run for Rep. Kay Alexander’s (R-Montrose) state House seat in 2002.

This week, Ray Rose, a Republican, announced he would vie to represent House District 58, covering parts of Delta, Dolores, Montezuma, Montrose, and Ouray counties. Alexander is vacating her seat to run for the state Senate in 2002.

"We feel very strongly about representing the Western Slope properly to make sure that we don’t get overshadowed by Eastern Slope interests," said Rose on Wednesday. Rose and his wife, Donna, have been married 38 years.

Rose worked for U S West for 35 years, after moving to Colorado from Kansas in 1972. He is the owner and CEO of the Colorado Shooting Institute and is a graduate of the American Pistol Institute. Rose said he has been actively raising money to buy and distribute free trigger locks to Montrose County residents.

Outside of his interest in defending the Seconnd Amendment, Rose said he wants to expand opportunities for higher education on the Western Slope so that "kids from the Western Slope can stay home and not have to leave."

Rose also supports funding primary education. "I think we should have some teaching responsibility, but I also feel very strongly that we need to provide teachers with the tools and resources they need to do the job properly," said Rose.

Other issues Rose is interested in are transportation improvements on the Western Slope, and funding programs for handicapped children.
