City's land-use code up for readoption

October 23, 2001

After five years under the current land-use code, the city of Cortez will consider a draft ordinance to amend and codify the code at tonight’s city council meeting.

Jeff Reinhart, the city’s zoning and building inspector, said the revised code will not include any major changes, but will incorporate the city’s annexations since 1996.

Typographical errors, incorrectly referenced sections, and title errors will be changed, as well as "housekeeping" items, such as including definitions for the positions of zoning administrator and building officials, both of which are already filled.

The current six supplements to the code will be codified to make the document easier to use and understand, said Reinhart.

The land-use code establishes zoning areas within the city. It also establishes subdivision regulations, creates site development standards, and provides general provisions for the city.

If the council readopts the code, all references to the Uniform Building Code will be deleted and replaced with a city-wide generic building code.

The uniform code was recently replaced by the International Building Code, which the city will be adopting in part, with some of the regulations enforced under the old uniform codes.

A final public hearing will be held on the revised land-use code on Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers.
