Locals have another chance to grab apples

ASHLEY VALDEZ, 5, of Dolores, gathers fallen apples at the Yellow Jacket research station for her father’s mules, Sambo and Jack. Saturday was a day that locals could pick apples at the demonstration project for 25 cents a pound. Another opportunity is coming up this weekend.

The Colorado State University Cooperative Extension staff from Montezuma and Dolores counties will have their final apple "U-Pick" day Saturday from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m.

The Yellow Jacket Demonstration Orchard Project is located at the Southwest Colorado Research Station on Road Z, approximately 15 miles north of Cortez on Highway 666 and a quarter-mile west of the highway.

For 25 cents per pound, you can pick your own apples. Varieties available include Scarlet Gala, Nured Jonathan, Pinova, Galaxy Gala, Idared Luster Elstar, Super Jon, Red Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Royal Empire, Liberty, Myra Red Fuji, Red Fuji, Sun Fuji and Swiss Gourmet.

All of these varieties can be used for cooking and out-of-hand eating, which the exception of Nured Jonathan, which is strictly a cooking apple.
