Ronald Reagan was president the last time Montezuma-Cortez High School celebrated a football homecoming victory, but fans have their hopes up that their luck will change this weekend.

Not since way back in 1986 have the Panther students and visiting alumni had a homecoming victory to cheer about.

The Panthers, 0-1 in Class AAA Western Slope League and 0-4 overall, host Glenwood Springs (0-1 and 0-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in Panther Stadium for Homecoming 2001.

MCHS is coming off a 48-12 drubbing by league-leading Rifle last Saturday. (See story on Page 8A.)

Many activities will keep MCHS students and fans busy today through Saturday night.

Students today can be found wearing their favorite Hawaiian shirts, muu-muus, and grass skirts, as it is Hawaiian Day at school.

The annual College Fair is set for 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Auxiliary Gym. Representatives from the state’s four- and two-year institutions will be on hand to answer questions regarding admissions, housing, and curricula.

On the varsity-sports front today, the MCHS boys’ soccer team hosts Kirtland (N.M.)-Central at 3 p.m. at Norman Johnson Memorial Field. The powerful MCHS volleyball team hosts arch-rival Durango at 7 p.m. in Ron Wright Memorial Gym.

Wednesday is pajama dress day. The annual Peach Fuzz Volleyball Game (boys) is slated for 7 p.m. in Ron Wright Memorial Gym.

It is jersey/hat day at the school on Thursday. The boys’ soccer team hosts powerhouse Durango at 3 p.m. at Norman Johnson Memorial Field.

In the evening, the girls will take to Panther Field for the annual Powder Puff Football Game at 7.

Friday is filled with activities. It is Spirit Day (orange and black) for the students. School will be released at 12:30 p.m. with buses running at 1.

The homecoming parade is set to start down Main Street at 2. The theme this year is "Guys and Dolls."

On the softball diamond, MCHS hosts a doubleheader with Palisade beginning at 2 p.m. at the City Softball Complex. The big football game is slated to kick off at 7.

The Panther boys’ tennis team gets Saturday off early at the Parque de Vida tennis courts. The Panthers host Durango beginning at 10 a.m.

The week’s finale — the homecoming dance — is set for the Montezuma County Annex Building and will run from 8 to 11 p.m.
